Why ‘caring’ for your website is the key to its success

We had a client who commissioned us to build a website for them. Everything went smoothly of course, and we delivered a product they were very happy with. However, that website no longer exists… Why? Because they opted not to have a care plan and the site wasn’t cared for by the owner.

See, software and websites require maintenance and care to keeping things running smoothly, just like a car. Avoiding website care & maintenance is like not having regular oil & filter changes on your vehicle or ignoring that flashing red light on your dashboard. We all know our vehicles don’t run for very long if we don’t look after them. It’s absolutely no different for your website. Your website should always be running in gear and firing on all cylinders. It should be ready to take your customers & visitors to where they need to be without any issues.

Websites are simply never ‘Set and Forget’

What the above client thought was that they could simply park their new site in the shed for 12 months and not think about it. Did you know that WordPress alone has released 25 updates in the space of 12 months, three of which were major ones! That’s not to mention the dozen other plugins which are installed on your site. Truth is, if you don’t have website maintenance carried out every month at a minimum, you might as well be throwing money down the toilet.

To give another example, a client who contracted us for their website build opted to DIY ‘care’ for their website. The time came for a major plugin that required updating. However, it wasn’t checked properly before making the change and it crashed their site..! They lost thousands in revenue over the next few days because their site needed to be repaired. Unfortunately, in the digital world it doesn’t take long for word to spread about things not working, and they tend to not hang around very long either.

The benefits of maintenance & care plans

Most people don’t realise the many benefits of site maintenance. This is mainly because it’s one of those intangibles, it tends to happen in the background, behind the scenes. Your website’s performance, loading times, downtime and uptime are all dependent on the WordPress software and it’s (often custom) plugins functioning as they should with the most recent version.

The website’s growth with fresh content, analytics monitoring & design changes are all dependent on this maintenance and you having someone who is making sure all the updates to the website are done in a smooth and error-free fashion.

Maintenance Workflow

At Newcastle Creative Co, we take great care to first backup the website and check the website after our updates for any issues. Our software keeps a record of plugins we update so if there is ever an issue, we can see what plugin version was changed and revert back. Also included in our monthly maintenance reports (if you opt for that plan) is a performance and security scan. Take a look at a few of the benefits of being on one of our care plans.

Dangers of DIY Maintenance

I tried to fix my broken Barina once. It took me three days and I had to drive that thing without an exhaust 40km to nearest mechanic to get it fixed properly! It was downright embarrassing. In our experience, the DIY mechanic has not worked out well and neither has the DIY site admin. Remember our mate earlier who wanted to be a DIY hero? Well the truth be told we couldn’t actually bring that site back to life and it needed to be rebuilt from scratch! Now that’s a costly lesson in the school of hard knocks.

It costs far more to fix than it does to maintain

We mentioned earlier about a person we knew who’s site went down and it cost them thousands in a matter of days. Quite frankly, that wouldn’t have happened if they invested in one of our care plans. Think of it this way, a small monthly investment in a Care Plan with the peace of mind knowing your site is secure & functioning or thousands lost in revenue and reputation?

Cue Newcastle Creative Co.

We believe that as a business owner in a field that you specialise in, you should be left to concentrate on those ventures. Not being distracted & frustrated by issues with your website. Think of it this way, do you prescribe your own medication or do you seek out a professional with safe and sound advice? Then why try to maintain your own website if you’re not a web professional? By utilising an experienced web professional to update and maintain your site properly, you’re actually saving potential lost revenue, sales and visitors.
